You have probably seen the word "candid" a lot in the photography world, you've probably heard it even more in your day to day life, and maybe some of you even remember the old tv show titled "Candid Camera". Our world has long time been head over heels in love with these real and raw expressions of emotion, and candid wedding photography will always have my preference. Before the pressure to make our weddings posed, put on, and performative, they were candid, genuine, and imperfectly perfect. As a candid wedding photographer I aim to bring this definition to life: "unobtrusive photography used to capture people in natural, unposed situations, often without them knowing, revealing spontaneous reactions for documentary purposes." When it comes to wedding photography I have always loved the real, the true, and the storytelling value that only candid photos can offer. Before I could ever name it or describe my style of photography when I was first starting, I gravitated fully and only to candid images with personality, charm, and character.
Candid photos aren't made only in the joyful, funny moments. They are made from every real emotion and the people who are comfortable enough to allow them to exist. No perfect expectations, no performative acts, simply real people feeling real emotions organically. This is why I lead my wedding days with a laid back, comforting approach. Because these candid photos cannot exist with strict timelines, unrealistic expectations, and stressed brides. However, they can and do exist when you have permission to feel, space to be comfortable, and opportunity to do both! I stayed away from the word candid for a long time, it was overused, had lost it's value, and became a cliche'. But real candid photography, in the most true version of the word, is still alive. Real candid photographers with the ability to blend in, document quietly, and turn your love into effortless art still exist. To me candid photography isn't a cliche. It is the heart of my work and what I do best.
